Our Casting Philosophy:

At Village Arts, we believe that acting and creating a show is a journey of discovery and learning. Theater thrives on teamwork, and we hope our students learn the value of working together as an ensemble through the creative process. Every participant is valued, and in turn, students learn to appreciate their peers, themselves, their teachers, and everyone else involved in the production.

Process and Casting

Our casting process is designed to support the growth and learning of every student. For a balanced and successful production, we use the following guidelines:

  • Lead Roles: Larger roles are typically assigned to our older and more experienced students (Grades 4 & 5 in Elementary, and Grades 7 & 8 in our Tween/Teen casts).
  • Ensemble Roles: Younger or less experienced students primarily serve as Ensemble Players.
The Importance of Ensemble: These students are the heartbeat of the show! They are on stage frequently—singing and dancing in almost every major musical number—and are crucial to the storytelling and energy of the performance.
  • Village Arts Mini Productions are intended as an introduction to the theatre, with an emphasis on storytelling, teamwork, and having fun! The mini adaptations are purposely very different from even the elementary-age scripts, and roles have been adjusted so that everyone gets a chance to participate more evenly and to the best of their ability. We do not hold auditions for our minis casts.

Roles will not be switched once assigned, but we will gladly work with your child to tailor a role to their strengths.

Our Commitment:

We devote a great deal of time, thought, and care into our casting process and decisions. While it can sometimes feel difficult or unfair, our choices are based not only on talent, but also on each child’s growth and our belief that every student will gain valuable experience through our ensemble-based process
